Oh god
I see Paul Potts of England-Idol-Got-Talent-Fame has a disc out and it is actually doing very well in sales. You remember the guy: He won over swarms of Boyz II Men fans not so much by the quality of his voice or taste, but simply by the manufactured moment of his personal history. A cell phone salesman was going to sing an opera aria: never! People understandably loved the story and got drunk with romance while this Puccini guy rang out over the stage just minutes after a Phil Collins cover. I think Plato describes this momentary irrational spell somewhere in his Republic. But my problem isn't that Potts got a record deal (good for him!), it's the selection of super crappy material on it. "You Raise me Up" is rivaled only by Bocelli's Con te partiro as the schlockiest and most obvious choice for a crossover track. Both of which appear on Potts's record...suprise, surprise.
Now for something genuinely uplifting: Robert Crumb turns 64 today, and I 27.

happy birthday
